What should I be watching for in my group members that might be evidence of distress or “at risk” behavior?

  • If a member communicates persistent thoughts of suicide, or serious intent to complete suicide, or talks about a specific suicide plan
  • If a member attempts to participate in the group and is clearly under the influence of a drug or alcohol
  • If a member exhibits profound and debilitating symptoms of anxiety or depression that interfere with the person’s basic self-care and ability to participate in the group
  • If a member demonstrates uncontrollable rage directed at others including threats to harm others

What should I do if a member is exhibiting evidence of any of the above behaviors?

  • Members communicating persistent suicidal ideation
    • Affirm the value of life and encourage the member to seek professional help
    • Provide the national suicide lifeline number: 1-800-273-8255
    • Remind the member of the local professional counselor options provided them by We Grieve at the time of membership
    • Contact We Grieve leadership

  • Members under the influence of drugs or alcohol
    • If the member’s sobriety is debilitated to the point that they are detrimental to the group, lovingly remove the member from the virtual gathering
    • Follow up with the group member at a later time, or refer the issue to We Grieve leadership

  • Members with profound and debilitating anxiety and depression interfering with self-care and an inability to function in the group gathering
    • Express care for the member and encourage the member to seek professional help
    • Remind the member of the local professional counselor options provided them by We Grieve at the time of membership
    • Only remove the member from the virtual gathering if the member’s behavior is impeding the progress of the group

  • Members demonstrating uncontrollable rage including threats to harm
    • Calmly explain to the member that this behavior is not acceptable in the group and that you will be removing them from the virtual gathering – remove the member
    • Contact We Grieve leadership

What are my responsibilities and limitations as a community facilitator?

As a community facilitator your role is to create a safe environment for the group, engaging members in discussion and encouraging a supportive, caring atmosphere.  Every effort should be made to maintain awareness of sensitivities of group members to emotionally charged topics. Facilitators should refer members in distress to professionals for addressing their emotional and psychological needs.

Facilitators are not therapists or professional counselors and regardless of experience, are not encouraged or allowed to offer therapy or counsel to members. While we anticipate positive experiences in our community gatherings and do our best to create positive and affirming environments, facilitators are not responsible to address mental health issues with members. The above guidelines should be followed to protect both members and facilitators.
